Classic Hunts with Lee Hawes
Lee Hawes was born in 1957 into a ranching and hunting family. He’s the fourth generation to cowboy and hunt in what was the Indian territories when Judge Hawes, Lee’s great-grandfather, first rode in. Lee still operates the ranch Judge started and it has become home again to the buffalo. Indeed, it is like they never left. Lee was mentored by his grandfather in the ways of the old-timers in such matters as cowboying, horses, hunting, woodcraft and survival skills, as well as the use of the dutch-oven. Through his association with other old-timers, Lee was in the unique position of being mentored by a dying class of men. He broke his first horse at the ripe old age of 9, trapped and hunted small-game with bows made under his grandfathers supervision, and killed his first deer with a stick bow at 16. After years of honing his skills hunting deer, elk, bear, and antelope across the U.S., Lee created Hawes Ranch Outfitters to provide a first class hunting experience for others. He and his crews hunt 7 species of big game, in several locations, seven months out of the year, totaling more than 130 clients a year. Lee places the emphasis on the whole experience of the hunt, not just harvesting an animal. Lee has also found that classic firearms and blackpowder put the challenge back in the game. He was the first outfitter in the country to target the blackpowder rifleman and the only man crazy enough to hunt buffalo out of a tipi camp with clients using horses. Lee has built a reputation on providing a first-class hunt and has a personal relationship with most of the manufactures and purveyors of period firearms and blackpowder accessories. This makes him one of the few people in the world that has successfully bridged the gap between his clients and the blackpowder industry. Lee’s persona, combined with the fact that his operation harvests more buffalo in a primitive setting than anyone else in the world, has earned him the title of THE BUFFALO HUNTER. He has traveled the world seeking adventure and big-game with old style firearms and weapons, while hosting the television show Classic Hunts, of which the first two seasons aired on The Sportsmans Channel. For the third season of the show, Lee’s production company, Jeremiah 16:16 Productions, is moving to the Pursuit Channel, available on DISH and DIRECT TV. Tune in this summer and fall for the most exciting season yet! The new season, to premier July 2008, will not only include traditional hunts, but modern adventures in exotic locations, as well. Lee and his team have been on the cutting edge of a new format of excitement and realism in the world of outdoor programming.
